Content-Management Driven Websites
Many websites start out with humble beginnings—a few pages about your company, your services, contact information, maybe a newsletter page. We call these brochure websites. For many businesses, they work just fine.
But sometimes, a company will outgrow the static pages of a brochure website, and want a website that shows their ever-changing list of products or services. Perhaps they want to have a members-only section to offer special content. Or they just want to blog about what’s new in their company, their services, or what clients are saying about them. These types of websites are what we call database-driven, using a content management system (CMS) that stores all the content in a centralized database on the web.
Why use a content management system?
To use my own website as an example: It makes website maintenance a lot easier when I can add a record to a client database (say, a new client) and have them appear in my portfolio without having to build each portfolio item by hand. You can also search and sort much more easily with a content management system. And, my happy client testimonials and Zen thoughts are pulled randomly from the database, which makes my web pages a little more dynamic and interesting. I don’t have to worry about where I put a testimonial—just update the database and the website shows that revision immediately.
How can this work for your website?
Here are a few ideas:
- Product lists and descriptions (and you’re just one short hop to an e-commerce website from there!)
- Frequently asked questions
- Membership lists / member-only areas
- Press releases
- What’s New? section
- Tips, tricks and ideas for using your products or services
- Client / Donor lists and testimonials
- Virtually all the content of your website, ready to be updated as you wish.
