But sometimes, a company will outgrow the static pages of a brochure website, and want a website that shows their ever-changing list of products or services. These types of websites are what we call database-driven, in that the content for the products, or member profiles, is kept in a database on the web, and not just simple static pages.

Most websites (like this one) are a hybrid of static content and database-driven content. Our testimonials (on the right) and our Zen thoughts all come from a database, and our portfolio of clients is also kept in the database. The rest of the content is hand-coded and hand-crafted within the webpage that holds it—not everything needs to be in a database!

Why use database-driven websites at all?

It makes website maintenance a lot easier when I can add a record to a client database (say, a new client) and have them appear in my portfolio without having to build each portfolio item by hand. You can also search and sort much more easily with database driven content. And, my happy client testimonials and Zen thoughts are pulled randomly from the database, which makes my webpages a little more dynamic and interesting. I don't have to worry about where I put a testimonial—just update the database and the website shows that revision immediately.
