Can't I get free hosting for my website?
There are several free web hosting services, as well as the “free” website you get from your Internet Service Provider (like AOL and Comcast), which you can use to create a web presence.
These services are a bad idea because:
- They do not allow you to have your own domain name (www.miketruesecreations.com)
or your own branded, professional email account (account@yourdomain.com)
but rather something like this:
www.geocities.yahoo.com/members/~17634 :
(Not very easy to remember, or type, is it?) - They make their money on advertisements, which get inserted all over your website. Can you say ugly banners and pop-up ads?
- They do not convey a level of professionalism (or permanence) for your business or organization.
- Setting up extras, like fill-in forms or e-commerce, can be difficult if not impossible to accomplish.
- Usually, you can't create your own website look, but must use a template, or pre-made cookie cutter website, that hundreds or thousands of other websites are using. And you can't take the code with you if you decide to upgrade to a better host later.
The same can be said for any email account you may be using that does not end in your own domain name (ex: mike334453@aol.com instead of yourname@yourwebsite.com).
Every aspect of your communications with clients should convey your own branding and message. Tell them you're serious about your own business and about theirs.
Using a "free" email and hosting service says, "I'm fly-by-night, or too cheap to care about quality." Is that the message you're trying to convey?
