What's the deal with 'cheap' web designers?

There will always be someone out there willing to be the “cheapest” price in town. Maybe they produce quality work; then again, probably not.

Remember, bad website design ultimately costs more than good website design, regardless of the price tag.

Lo varato sale caro. (The cheap comes out expensive) - translate to any language of your choice.

Usually, cheap designers are new to the business and looking to establish a client base, students in school, or worse, moonlighting. (What about long term support when some new job comes along?) And a lot of them are located outside the USA, which for USA-based clients, can be a huge hassle for support, communication, and maintenance

Or they are using templates, which are pre-designed websites available for purchase. Some templates look great, others are garbage. A common problem you run into with a template is that other people can buy and use it, and your website will share its look with many, many others.

Sometimes, when you want a cake, you turn to Duncan Hines (a template) or Sara Lee (pre-made). But when you want something truly special, you make it from scratch. Wouldn't you like something special for your website? Don't you deserve the best for your money?

As you consider different firms to help you create your web presence, ask yourself the following:

  1. Do they have a quality portfolio? And what about glowing client testimonials? What do their existing clients have to say about them (you did check references, right?)
  2. When they talk, does any of it make sense? When YOU talk, are they even listening?
  3. Are they in the same country as you are? Do they speak the same language?
  4. Do they make you feel like they're willing to work for your long-term success, or like they want to just invoice you and move on?
  5. Do you want to help a beginner or part-timer build their portfolio on your dime, or do you want a solid firm with a proven track record of successful websites and happy clients?
  6. Do they use templates or other pre-built cookie-cutters, or is the work you're paying good money for original in design, structure and proper coding?
  7. Are they low-balling you to get you to sign on the dotted line? What about follow-up support and maintenance? How easy are they to get on the phone?
